Senior Indian National Congress (Congress) leader and former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot on Saturday, 1 August launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Bhajanlal Sharma government in Rajasthan, accusing it of deliberately postponing panchayat, municipal, and student union elections out of fear of adverse public sentiment. His remarks came ahead of the upcoming Rajasthan Legislative Assembly session, adding a charged political dimension to an already tense pre-session period.

Election Delay Allegations

Pilot alleged that the state government has repeatedly cited fresh excuses to defer constitutionally mandated local body elections, even as the Rajasthan High Court has issued repeated notices and directions demanding that polls be held on schedule. He argued that the BJP's reluctance to conduct these elections is a direct admission of widespread public dissatisfaction with its governance.

Notably, Pilot drew a pointed contradiction: while both the Centre and the Rajasthan government publicly champion the concept of 'One Nation, One Election,' they have, he alleged, shown little willingness to hold even routine, constitutionally required elections on time. Critics argue this inconsistency undermines the credibility of the electoral reform agenda.

NEET Controversy and Education Ministry

Turning to the NEET examination controversy, Pilot said the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was a belated response to sustained student protests and public outrage. However, he cautioned that a ministerial exit or tougher legislation alone would not deliver justice to affected candidates.

According to Pilot, the government must take decisive action against what he described as the 'exam mafia' and 'coaching mafia,' alongside structural reforms to the examination system, to genuinely address students' grievances. This comes amid a broader national debate over the integrity of centralised entrance tests.

Congress Strategy for Assembly Session

Ahead of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly session, Pilot said the Congress intends to function as a responsible yet vigilant opposition. He claimed that with nearly half of the BJP government's tenure elapsed, a significant number of its electoral promises remain unfulfilled.

The Congress, he said, plans to press the government on issues including law and order, unemployment, inflation, and corruption. This is consistent with the party's broader opposition posture across BJP-governed states in the run-up to future electoral cycles.

Alleged Misuse of Constitutional Institutions

Pilot also alleged that central investigative and constitutional agencies are increasingly being weaponised to suppress dissent and target political opponents. He asserted that the opposition would persist in amplifying public concerns and would not allow voices of dissent to be silenced.

With the Assembly session approaching, Pilot's broadside signals that the Congress is preparing a multi-front offensive — on local governance, education policy, and civil liberties — that could set the tone for a combative legislative session.
