New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on Thursday regarding the passing of Swaraj Kaushal, a prominent lawyer and former governor of Mizoram. He was the husband of the late Sushma Swaraj, a former Union Minister, and the father of BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the Prime Minister stated, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of Shri Swaraj Kaushal Ji. He was not only a remarkable lawyer but also a person committed to enhancing the lives of the underprivileged through his legal expertise.”
Reflecting on Kaushal’s contributions, the PM noted, “He became the youngest governor in India’s history and significantly impacted the people of Mizoram throughout his time in office. His contributions as a Parliamentarian were also noteworthy. My thoughts are with his daughter, Bansuri, and the rest of the family during this challenging time.”
At the age of 73, Kaushal passed away in the afternoon following a medical complication. He was admitted to the AIIMS Emergency Department at 10:45 a.m. in critical condition. Despite the emergency medical team's immediate resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead at 1:50 p.m., according to the hospital’s statement.
A multitude of political leaders expressed their condolences for Kaushal, who was cremated at the Lodhi Road cremation ground that evening.
In her social media tribute, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj honored her father, stating, “Papa Swaraj Kaushal ji, your love, discipline, simplicity, patriotism, and infinite patience illuminate my life and will never fade.”
“Your departure has enveloped me in profound sorrow, yet I hold onto the belief that you have now reunited with Mother in divine tranquility,” she expressed.
“Being your daughter fills me with immense pride, and your legacy, values, and blessings will guide my future endeavors,” she added.
Born in Solan on July 12, 1952, Kaushal was a distinguished criminal lawyer educated in Delhi and Chandigarh. He served as the governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993.
Additionally, he was a member of Parliament from 1998 to 2004, representing the Haryana Vikas Party and serving in the Rajya Sabha during two separate terms.
Kaushal wed Sushma Swaraj in 1975, and their only daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, currently serves as a BJP Lok Sabha member from New Delhi. Sushma Swaraj passed away from a cardiac arrest on August 6, 2019, in New Delhi.
Throughout his career, Kaushal gained recognition as an expert on the northeastern region and its insurgency issues.
He is remembered for his pivotal role in the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986, which concluded two decades of insurgency. He was also appointed as the first Advocate General of Mizoram in 1987.
Early in his legal career, Kaushal gained prominence by representing socialist leader George Fernandes during the Baroda dynamite case trial amid the Emergency period of 1975-77.
