New Delhi, Oct 4 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday honored two eminent personalities from India’s struggle for freedom, Tiruppur Kumaran and Subramania Siva, from Tamil Nadu, emphasizing that their sacrifices and principles serve as a guiding light as the nation progresses towards unity and development.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister stated, “Today, we celebrate and pay homage to Tiruppur Kumaran and Subramania Siva, two noble sons of Bharat Mata who devoted their lives to the fight for India’s independence and fostering a sense of patriotism. Their contributions remain a source of inspiration as we strive for enhanced national integration and advancement.”

Modi praised Tiruppur Kumaran, affectionately known as Kodi Kaththa Kumaran (the Kumaran who protected the flag), for his remarkable bravery and ultimate sacrifice. In 1932, during a demonstration against British colonial rule, Kumaran steadfastly clung to the banned Indian national flag, even as he faced police brutality. His demise, while holding the Tricolour, became a poignant emblem of defiance and love for freedom, especially among the youth of Tamil Nadu.

The Prime Minister also honored the legacy of Subramania Siva, a passionate writer, speaker, and social reformer, who used his literary talents and eloquence to instill a sense of national pride in numerous young Indians. A close ally of V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and other revolutionaries, Siva endured constant imprisonment and severe health challenges due to his activism.

His relentless spirit and writings, including those in his journal Gnanabhanu, played a crucial role in cultivating resistance and cultural confidence during a period of intense colonial oppression. “The struggles of these two remarkable men remind us of the countless lives sacrificed and the hardships faced in the quest for India’s freedom from colonial rule,” PM Modi remarked. “Their fearless commitment and love for our motherland should continue to steer our nation’s journey.”

By recalling the courage of Kumaran and the intellectual vigor of Siva, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of remembering the sacrifices that paved the way for independent India and transforming that spirit into unity, resilience, and forward-looking progress.
