Chennai, April 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Railway Bridge at Rameswaram, located in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district, representing a major milestone in India’s infrastructure progress.

The Prime Minister remotely operated the vertical lift span of the bridge, allowing a Coast Guard ship to navigate beneath.

This newly inaugurated structure is the first vertical lift railway sea bridge in the country, highlighting a significant advancement in indigenous engineering.

Additionally, PM Modi launched a new train service connecting Rameswaram and Tambaram in Chennai, further enhancing regional connectivity and making travel easier for commuters and pilgrims.

Though Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was unable to attend due to previous commitments in the Nilgiris, the event was graced by several notable leaders and officials, including Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, state Minister Thangam Thennarasu, and BJP leaders such as K. Annamalai, Sudhakar Reddy, H. Raja, and Nainar Nagenthiran, along with Ramanathapuram District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon.

On social media platform X, the Prime Minister shared a profound moment from his journey, stating: “On my return from Sri Lanka recently, I was fortunate to experience a Darshan of the Ram Setu. Coincidentally, it coincided with the Surya Tilak happening in Ayodhya. I feel blessed to have witnessed both. Prabhu Shri Ram is a unifying force for us all. May His blessings always be upon us.”

The bridge spans 2.08 kilometers and was constructed at a cost of Rs 550 crore. It comprises 99 spans and features a 72.5-metre vertical lift section capable of elevating to 17 meters. Designed to accommodate dual rail tracks, the bridge is prepared to address future transportation needs.

A standout feature of the bridge is its vertical lift span, weighing 660 metric tons. This lift system was entirely developed with Indian technology, allowing large vessels to pass underneath without hampering rail traffic. This engineering achievement is set to enhance connectivity to Rameswaram, a key pilgrimage site, facilitating easier travel for thousands of devotees and tourists annually.

Preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit were extensive, involving a detailed inspection of essential locations in Rameswaram and Pamban. Important infrastructure and logistics were evaluated at significant sites including the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Mandapam camp helipad, Kunthukal, Mandapam railway station, and the Pamban road bridge. A thorough security analysis with top officials from the railways, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies was also conducted to ensure a seamless inauguration.

In a statement released on April 5, Indian Railways remarked, “Bridging the past while elevating the future, Pamban stands proudly with a stunning view. This Ram Navami, witness the unveiling of India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge.”

The bridge not only links Rameswaram to the mainland but also serves as a remarkable showcase of Indian innovation and excellence on a global scale.
