New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday honored the legacy of socialist thinker Dr Ram Manohar Lohia on the occasion of his 115th birth anniversary.

In a post on X, PM Modi remarked that Lohia was a fundamental figure in Indian politics, dedicating his life to the empowerment of the underprivileged.

"Reflecting on Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia’s birth anniversary, I see a visionary leader, a passionate freedom fighter, and a symbol of social justice. He devoted his life to uplifting the disadvantaged and constructing a robust India," PM Modi stated in his post.

He also shared a video that showcased Lohia’s contributions to the Independence movement.

According to PM Modi, Lohia was a profound thinker from the past century, yet his ideas continue to significantly shape the political landscape of contemporary India.

"In 1942, when the Quit India movement commenced, he took charge. He frequently engaged in Satyagraha even while imprisoned, fighting for the nation's freedom, and became a source of inspiration for the youth of that era," PM Modi shared in the video clip.

The BJP President, Jagat Prakash Nadda, also honored Lohia. He wrote in a post on X, "I express my sincere tributes to the esteemed freedom fighter and founder of Sapt Kranti, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia ji on his birth anniversary. By promoting high standards of integrity and transparency in Indian politics, revered Lohia ji has laid the groundwork for nation-building through his nationalist ideology and efforts in social empowerment. His contributions toward uplifting the marginalized and advocating for social justice will continue to inspire us all."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while paying his respects, emphasized that Lohia’s principles surrounding women's education, social equality, and political integrity are motivational for everyone.

"Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia ji was one of the distinguished personalities in India's political and social history, who remained steadfast to his principles and values of patriotism throughout his life. His thoughts on women's education, social equality, and political integrity serve as an inspiration for all. I pay my respects to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia ji on his birth anniversary," he stated.

Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia was born on this day in 1910 in Akbarpur, located in Uttar Pradesh's Ambedkar Nagar district, and passed away on October 12, 1967.

After playing a significant role in the Independence movement, Lohia remained a strong foundation in the politics of Independent India. He is celebrated for his staunch socialist beliefs. Lohia was a member of both the Praja Socialist Party and the Samyukta Socialist Party. In 1962, he contested against former PM Jawaharlal Nehru in Phulpur, though he lost the election. He later won a by-election in 1963, becoming a Lok Sabha member from Farukkhabad, and subsequently won the election from the Kannauj constituency in 1967.
