New Delhi, Feb 26 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday led the nation in honoring the esteemed freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his death anniversary.
In a social media post, PM Modi stated that the nation will always remember his remarkable contributions to the freedom struggle.
"On behalf of all countrymen, I pay a respectful tribute to Veer Savarkar ji on his death anniversary. Our grateful nation will never forget his invaluable contributions, characterized by penance, sacrifice, bravery, and struggle in the fight for freedom.
Born on May 28, 1883, Veer Savarkar began his political journey at a young age. He firmly believed that India's quest for independence should embrace the principles of Swadeshi and promote the boycott of foreign goods, alongside imparting education to foster a revolutionary spirit.
As one of the most influential freedom fighters, Savarkar was not just a lawyer but also a writer and activist. He authored numerous books, but is most noted for his work 'Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?'
In 1911, he was sentenced to 50 years in the notorious cellular jail of the Andamans for opposing the Morley-Minto reforms, but he was released in 1924. After his release, he dedicated himself to combating untouchability in Ratnagiri.
Later, he became the president of the Hindu Mahasabha and opposed the Quit India movement in 1942. He also criticized the Indian National Congress for agreeing to India's partition.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to Savarkar, describing him as a dynamic and nationalistic thinker and a great freedom fighter.
