New Delhi, Feb 26 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday led the nation in honoring the esteemed freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his death anniversary.
In a social media post, PM Modi stated that the nation will always remember his remarkable contributions to the freedom struggle.
"On behalf of all countrymen, I pay a respectful tribute to Veer Savarkar ji on his death anniversary. Our grateful nation will never forget his invaluable contributions, characterized by penance, sacrifice, bravery, and struggle in the fight for freedom.
Born on May 28, 1883, Veer Savarkar began his political journey at a young age. He firmly believed that India's quest for independence should embrace the principles of Swadeshi and promote the boycott of foreign goods, alongside imparting education to foster a revolutionary spirit.
As one of the most influential freedom fighters, Savarkar was not just a lawyer but also a writer and activist. He authored numerous books, but is most noted for his work 'Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?'
In 1911, he was sentenced to 50 years in the notorious cellular jail of the Andamans for opposing the Morley-Minto reforms, but he was released in 1924. After his release, he dedicated himself to combating untouchability in Ratnagiri.
Later, he became the president of the Hindu Mahasabha and opposed the Quit India movement in 1942. He also criticized the Indian National Congress for agreeing to India's partition.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to Savarkar, describing him as a dynamic and nationalistic thinker and a great freedom fighter.
"... Savarkar ji demonstrated through his life how an individual can achieve remarkable levels of sacrifice and dedication for their homeland, culture, and nation. His life story, which liberated society from caste and class barriers while establishing a strong foundation of national unity, will inspire generations to serve the motherland," Minister Shah expressed (in Hindi) on his X handle.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remarked that Savarkar epitomized unwavering commitment to India's freedom and cultural resurgence.
He shared in Hindi on his X handle, "Countless salutes to the great freedom fighter, vigorous revolutionary, and brilliant thinker 'Swatantryaveer' Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his death anniversary! His life represents unwavering dedication to the freedom of Mother India and cultural revival. The principles of nationalism, national interest, and national religion he advocated continue to inspire us today.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ekntah Shinde expressed in Marathi on his X handle, loosely translated: "Millions of salutes to the great patriot, ... revolutionary, dynamic orator, and gifted literary and social reformer Swatantraveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his memorial day."
