How do the People of Sikkim Feel About PM Modi Launching Key Development Projects?

Gangtok, May 29 (NationPress) On Thursday, PM Modi virtually inaugurated a series of significant development projects in Sikkim, igniting a wave of excitement and appreciation among the locals. Although he intended to participate in the 'Sikkim@50' festivities in person, adverse weather conditions thwarted his helicopter's landing in Gangtok.

In his absence, the event attracted a substantial crowd, with participants voicing their delight regarding the new initiatives unveiled for the region.

Addressing the audience via video link, PM Modi underscored Sikkim's accomplishments over the last fifty years and introduced various projects aimed at enhancing tourism, infrastructure, and youth development within the state. His message resonated deeply with many residents who valued his emphasis on Sikkim’s distinct identity and potential.

In an interview with IANS, former MLA Nar Bahadur Khatiwada stated: "While PM Modi couldn’t be here physically, his heartfelt words were impactful. We are extremely grateful for the attention he has shown to Sikkim. As a member of the BJP for 14 years, I am dedicated to serving the community. We hope the Prime Minister will address the state's long-standing requests."

A local student attending the event expressed her enthusiasm.

"I came here eager to see our Prime Minister in person. Even though he couldn’t attend due to the weather, hearing him speak virtually was quite amazing. His announcement regarding the new tourism infrastructure is particularly thrilling. Tourism is Sikkim’s lifeblood, creating jobs and opportunities for many."

Another event-goer remarked: "I wish to extend my gratitude to the organizers for such a magnificent celebration. It's unfortunate the Prime Minister couldn't be present, but his address was truly inspiring. I especially valued his focus on cultural tourism, the cultural economy, and support for the music industry. He also highlighted the need for improved sports facilities, which greatly encourages our youth. We eagerly anticipate his visit soon."

Initially, the Prime Minister was scheduled to land at the Libing helipad at 9:45 a.m. to partake in the 50th Statehood Day celebration. However, relentless rain and poor visibility in Gangtok led to the cancellation of his trip.

Earlier, PM Modi mentioned the recent Rising North East Summit held in New Delhi, where numerous industrialists and business leaders committed to investing in Sikkim. These investments are projected to fortify the state’s economy and generate new job opportunities.

The day also marked a pivotal moment in Sikkim's political history. On May 16, 1975, Sikkim transitioned from a monarchy to a full-fledged state within the Indian Union, following a landmark referendum. This integration into India was reinforced by Article 371F, a constitutional provision designed to protect Sikkim's unique cultural identity and traditions.

Over the last fifty years, Sikkim has emerged as a national frontrunner in sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The state government has initiated a year-long celebration themed 'Sunaulo, Samriddha, and Samarth Sikkim' (meaning Golden, Prosperous, and Capable Sikkim) to showcase its accomplishments, vibrant culture, and rich traditions.
