New Delhi, May 20 (NationPress) India’s pioneering female Olympic medalist, Karnam Malleswari, expressed her sheer delight when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited her sports academy located in Yamunanagar, Haryana. He extended his heartfelt wishes and support for nurturing aspiring athletes at her training center.
Malleswari, an iconic figure in weightlifting, highlighted a significant transformation in the support systems for sports following 2014, the year when Modi took office. She lamented the absence of a supportive and approachable leader like him during her competitive years.
In a video shared by Modi Story, a well-known social media account on X, Malleswari detailed how Modi promptly acknowledged her request and how his encouraging words significantly uplift athletes, especially during challenging times.
“Prior to 2014, athletes pursued their ambitions quietly—training rigorously and winning medals but receiving minimal support. Today, PM Modi not only recognizes their challenges but actively stands with them, offering support and celebrating their achievements,” stated Modi Story on X.
Recounting her experience, Malleswari shared, “I sent a letter to PM Modi, inviting him to my Sports Academy in Yamunanagar. I was skeptical given his busy agenda. However, one Sunday, I received a call from the Prime Minister’s Office confirming that my letter was received and that he would be visiting soon.”
“The occasion of meeting PM Modi was incredibly special. He not only assured us of comprehensive support but also made us feel at ease. He even blessed us with a touch on my forehead,” she recounted, reflecting on last month’s event.
She emphasized that prior to 2014, the sports community faced numerous challenges, but the current focus on sports has dramatically shifted.
“PM Modi takes the initiative to meet athletes, offers them encouragement, and comforts them during tough times. This makes me wonder why a leader like him wasn’t present during our time,” she expressed in the video.
Karnam, a two-time world champion and a two-time Asian Games silver medalist, has the distinction of being the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, securing bronze at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
She has received several prestigious accolades from the Indian government, including the Arjuna Award (1994), Khel Ratna (1999), and Padma Shri (1999).
