Chennai, Nov 4 (NationPress) In a disturbing escalation of internal conflicts within the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Salem West MLA R. Arul and his allies—who are supporters of party founder Dr. S. Ramadoss—were reportedly assaulted by followers of party president Anbumani Ramadoss in the Salem district on Tuesday.
According to reports, the confrontation took place when Arul was returning from a visit to the PMK union secretary's residence in Pethanaickenpalayam.
As his convoy neared Vazhapadi, a group of approximately 20 individuals allegedly began throwing stones at the vehicles transporting Arul and his entourage.
In retaliation, Arul's supporters also retaliated by throwing stones back, resulting in chaotic scenes along the busy road.
Describing the incident, Arul claimed that the attackers were loyal to Anbumani. He said, “While heading back to Salem, around 20 of Anbumani’s supporters shouted slogans in his favor and assaulted our vehicle using stones, wooden planks, and iron rods. If I had exited the car, they would have killed me.”
He noted that the attack occurred despite the presence of several police officers who attempted to intervene.
Arul criticized the leadership of the party, questioning, “Anbumani continually talks about decent and developmental politics. Is this what he considers decent?”
He mentioned that about 50 of his supporters were in multiple vehicles, but he advised them not to disembark to avoid worsening the situation.
Five of his associates suffered injuries and were taken to the Salem Government Hospital.
A police constable was also hurt during the stone-throwing incident.
“We have filed a complaint and are confident that the police will take action and ensure our safety,” Arul stated.
He also revealed that both S. Ramadoss and the party’s honorary president, G. K. Mani, reached out to him after the attack to check on his condition.
“We urge Anbumani not to mislead the youth in this manner. The PMK was founded on principles of justice and equality, not violence,” he added.
Authorities have registered a case and are currently investigating the matter.
In light of the recent conflict between the two factions of the PMK, security measures have been intensified in Salem.
