Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), under the leadership of Anbumani Ramadoss, has officially affiliated itself with the alliance led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
This announcement came from Edappadi Palaniswami, the General Secretary of the AIADMK and Leader of the Opposition, after a series of high-level discussions in Chennai.
Anbumani Ramadoss visited Palaniswami at his residence on Greenways Road in Chennai, where they engaged in comprehensive discussions regarding the alliance's structure, preparations for the 2026 elections, and the parameters for seat-sharing.
Following their meeting, both leaders addressed the media, officially confirming PMK's inclusion in the AIADMK-led coalition.
Palaniswami informed reporters that the AIADMK remains part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the national level and that PMK has now aligned itself with the AIADMK-led coalition in Tamil Nadu.
He characterized PMK's addition as a significant and positive development, noting that the alliance was formed through mutual understanding between the two parties.
Palaniswami indicated that discussions regarding seat-sharing were nearing completion, with a formal announcement expected once the negotiations conclude.
He refrained from answering questions about whether preliminary alliance talks with PMK had occurred earlier and departed without providing further clarity on the issue.
The AIADMK leader also suggested that negotiations on seat-sharing were approaching a conclusion. Political insiders revealed that in the previous Assembly elections, PMK had contested 23 seats within an alliance. In current negotiations, the AIADMK is believed to have proposed around 15 seats to PMK.
However, sources indicated that PMK is advocating for more than 20 seats, which has led to intense negotiations between both parties.
It has also been reported that AIADMK leadership has set certain conditions in the talks, including limits on seat allocation and clear guidelines on leadership representation within the alliance.
With PMK's official entry into the AIADMK-led alliance, the opposition in Tamil Nadu is beginning to take a more defined shape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, which are anticipated to be fiercely contested with evolving alliances and vigorous political campaigning.
