Nilambur, June 19 (NationPress) In spite of the downpour, enthusiastic voters formed lines at the 263 polling stations located in Nilambur, Kerala, where the bypolls are currently underway.

Voting commenced at 7 a.m., and after the initial two hours, a polling rate of 8 percent was noted.

The constituency comprises a total of 2,32,381 registered voters, including 1,13,613 males, 1,18,760 females, and eight transgender individuals.

A total of ten candidates are contesting, with four of them expressing optimism about their chances.

The main contest is between Aryadan Shoukath from the Congress and M. Swaraj from the CPI(M). Also in contention are two-time former Independent legislator P. V. Anvar, who resigned from the seat in January due to disagreements with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Mohan George from the BJP.

Shoukath arrived at the polling booth with his family, expressing excitement at the turnout of voters.

“I am certain that I will win by a significant margin,” he declared.

Shortly after Shoukath cast his vote, CPI(M)'s Swaraj also appeared to vote. The two were seen exchanging congratulations and shared a friendly embrace before parting ways.

Swaraj, a former CPI(M) legislator, is equally confident that he will emerge victorious when the votes are tallied on June 23.

However, the most self-assured candidate seems to be Anvar, who claims he will secure over 75,000 votes. Notably, he does not have a registered vote in this constituency, unlike the three leading candidates.

“Once the counting concludes, I will obtain my ticket to the Kerala Assembly, Shoukath will return to his writing, and Swaraj can head back to his party headquarters,” Anvar remarked.

Voting will proceed until 6 p.m. The Chief Electoral Officer, Ratan U. Kelkar, reported that the voting process is running smoothly overall, with only minor issues being monitored closely.
