Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) A number of postpartum women at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital in the East Burdwan district of West Bengal fell ill on Monday night after reportedly receiving the incorrect injection.
At the time of this report, there had been no fatalities.
Hospital officials stated on Tuesday morning that all affected postpartum women are no longer in distress.
There has been confusion regarding the precise number of women who fell ill on Monday night. The principal of Burdwan Medical College, Mousumi Bandopadhyay, mentioned that the official count was seven, while some relatives of the patients assert that the number is at least ten.
Bandopadhyay indicated that the health issues arose due to allergic reactions following the injection, although all patients are currently stable.
Family members of the affected postpartum women reported that these mothers were in good health prior to the injections. “Complications began immediately after they received three injections in quick succession. They exhibited symptoms such as fever and shivering. It’s possible they received the wrong injections or were given them on an empty stomach, leading to these complications,” claimed a relative of one of the patients.
In a separate incident at another state-run hospital in Kolkata in West Midnapore district, seven women became ill after allegedly receiving expired Ringer’s Lactate. Tragically, one postpartum woman died, while six others eventually recovered after being critically ill for several days.
The state government refuted these allegations and instead held certain doctors accountable for negligence in treating the postpartum women. Consequently, ten doctors from the hospital faced suspension, although their suspensions were lifted last month.
