Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated annually on July 26, to celebrate India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War, which involved expelling Pakistani forces from their entrenched positions atop the mountains of the Northern Kargil District in Ladakh in 1999.
This day is celebrated across India, including the national capital of New Delhi, in honor of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War.
Various events are organized nationwide to honor the contributions of the Indian Armed Forces.
Initially, the Pakistani military denied its involvement in the conflict, attributing it to Kashmiri militants. However, evidence from casualties, testimonials from prisoners of war, and later admissions by Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief Pervez Musharraf indicated the participation of Pakistani paramilitary forces, led by General Ashraf Rashid.
