Pamba, Oct 22 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu embarked on her inaugural visit to the renowned Sabarimala temple in Kerala on Wednesday. Upon reaching the foothills of the temple town in Pamba, she proceeded to pray before the deity after an ascent by vehicle.
Once in Pamba, she engaged in the rituals for preparing the sacred offering bundle, known as irumudikettu, at the Pamba Ganapathi Temple.
Shortly thereafter, dressed elegantly in a black saree adorned with a gold border, she carried the irumudikettu atop her head.
She then boarded a special Gurkha jeep, opting for a quicker route instead of the standard pilgrimage trek, which typically takes about an hour.
Accompanied by a convoy of five additional vehicles, they ascended the hill along the Swami Ayyappan concrete road to reach the peak.
At the Kodimaram Chuvadu (flag post area), she was greeted by the chief priest, Tantri Kantar Mahesh Mohanar, who welcomed her with a poornakumbham ritual.
President Murmu then ascended the sacred 18 steps while carrying the irumudikettu, pausing briefly on one step.
In a moment of deep reverence, she prayed before the deity, one hand on the irumudikettu and the other over her heart.
The chief priest instructed her to place the offering bundle on the steps leading to the sanctum sanctorum, a gesture mirrored by her companions. Afterward, he prayed inside the temple, emerging to present her with the sacred 'prasadam', which she applied as sandalwood paste on her forehead.
After a period of prayer, she circled the temple and later retired to the guest house at Sannidhanam for rest. Her plans include returning to Thiruvananthapuram by evening.
With this visit, President Murmu becomes only the second president to offer prayers at the temple, following in the footsteps of V.V. Giri, who visited five decades ago.
Earlier that day, her travel itinerary was altered due to poor weather conditions. Initially planned to land at Nilackal, her helicopter instead touched down at a stadium in Pramadom, Konni.
Moreover, contrary to earlier arrangements, Kerala Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar did not accompany her; instead, she was joined by State Devasom Minister V.N. Vasavan.
Upon her arrival at Pramadom, she was welcomed by local MP Anto Antony, along with legislators and high-ranking officials. From there, she proceeded to Pamba.
Interestingly, the temple was closed to all other pilgrims during her visit and will reopen after her departure from Sabarimala.
