Ganderbal, Jan 11 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 13 to open the Z-Morh Tunnel, an essential infrastructure initiative aimed at ensuring all-weather access to the picturesque hill station of Sonamarg.

Ganderbal, Jan 11 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to visit Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 13 to officially open the Z-Morh Tunnel, a significant infrastructure development intended to provide all-weather connectivity to the beautiful hill station of Sonamarg.

As per official reports, the Z-Morh Tunnel stretches 6.5 kilometers in length and features a two-lane road that connects Gagangir and Sonamarg, effectively bypassing the avalanche-prone Gagangir-Sonamarg route.

This tunnel derives its name from the 'Z-shaped' segment of road it replaces, significantly cutting down travel time to merely 15 minutes compared to the lengthy journey along the previous path.

A local resident expressed appreciation, highlighting the route's significance for improving connectivity during the winter months.

"This is crucial; after its completion, the Sonamarg-Ladakh road will remain accessible year-round. As Ladakh is a border region, essential goods that previously had to be flown can now be transported by road due to the construction and opening of this tunnel. Hence, this is extremely vital," he noted.

"The community is delighted, and we are grateful to the Central government. The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate this on January 13. The Central government, particularly Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, has launched numerous initiatives regarding this," he continued.

The tunnel, alongside the nearby Zoji-La Tunnel, is strategically important for ensuring weather-resistant connectivity to regions like Baltal (Amarnath Cave), Kargil, and Ladakh. This infrastructure will not only bolster military logistics but will also invigorate tourism and economic endeavors, thereby creating job opportunities for local youth.

Initiated in 2018, the Z-Morh Tunnel is part of a larger project that includes 31 road tunnels being built in the area—20 in Jammu and Kashmir and 11 in Ladakh.

However, the project faced significant adversity, including a tragic terror attack on October 20, 2024, when two terrorists infiltrated the workers' camp at Gagangir, resulting in the deaths of seven civilians, comprising six non-local workers and a local doctor.

The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel represents a pivotal achievement in enhancing connectivity and promoting growth in the region, further solidifying its geostrategic and economic importance.
