Priyadarshini Hakim Returns from Saudi Arabia, Addresses the Plight of Stranded Indians Amidst West Asia Crisis
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) Priyadarshini Hakim, daughter of Firhad Hakim, the West Bengal Minister and Mayor of Kolkata, has returned home from Saudi Arabia after completing Umrah. She expressed relief upon her arrival, especially as numerous Indians remain trapped in the region amidst the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
In an interview with IANS, she shared, “It feels wonderful to be back. Our flight landed early in the morning. My two sisters and father were observing Roza and came to greet us promptly despite their fasting.”
Priyadarshini voiced her worries for those still unable to return.
“Many individuals are still stuck there. I encountered two friends from Kolkata during my stay. As soon as I got my ticket, I notified them, but by the time they attempted to book, the tickets had sold out. Additionally, I have several friends in Dubai who are also stranded. I’ve been in contact with them as they seek ways to return,” she elaborated.
She mentioned that her family traveled to Saudi Arabia for Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan.
“Our visit to Saudi Arabia was to perform Umrah. Undertaking this pilgrimage during Ramadan is particularly significant. The children had a five-day break, which made it an ideal time for our trip. Upon our arrival, the atmosphere was tranquil. However, we soon learned that the war had commenced,” she recounted.
Despite their concerns, she emphasized the importance of maintaining composure.
“We weren’t overly frightened. When embarking on any religious pilgrimage, you entrust yourself to a higher power—God. Naturally, our relatives back home were anxious,” she added.
Reflecting on her daughter’s response to the violence reports, she remarked that it had affected the child deeply.
“My daughter is too young to comprehend the concept of war. She asked her father what it entails. After seeing on Instagram that 165 girls were killed in an attack in Iran, she became frightened. At just seven years old, she was terrified after viewing graves and kept asking, ‘Mama, can someone truly kill others like this?’”
Priyadarshini mentioned that she has been reassuring her daughter while also keeping in touch with friends and acquaintances still awaiting flights back to India.
