Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 19 (NationPress) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Chairperson of the Congress Screening Committee and MP from Wayanad, is set to visit Assam on Thursday for a two-day engagement as the party intensifies its efforts for the forthcoming Assembly elections.
As reported by party officials, Gandhi will kick off her trip with prayers at the Kamakhya Temple before heading to Rajiv Bhawan, the headquarters of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. She is expected to participate in meetings focused on screening starting at 11 a.m. and will continue discussions well into the night.
This visit was officially announced during a press conference led by Jitendra Singh, AICC general secretary in charge of Assam, alongside Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
Singh highlighted that the Screening Committee, under Priyanka’s leadership, will engage with Block Congress leaders, representatives from various organizations, and grassroots members as part of the candidate selection strategy. He emphasized that this structured screening process is a first for the state. Furthermore, Singh noted that Priyanka plans to return to Assam several times leading up to the elections to assess public sentiment and enhance organizational coordination.
According to Gogoi, the party aims to expedite the screening process, with the possibility of releasing the first batch of Congress candidates by the end of February after discussions with central leadership.
Gogoi asserted that Congress is ahead in its election preparations and confirmed ongoing discussions regarding potential alliances with like-minded opposition parties.
In his remarks targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi accused him of lacking the moral authority to discuss “Hindu leadership” and raised concerns about his standing amid allegations related to land and cattle syndicates.
He also addressed recent political developments involving senior leaders, suggesting that attempts are being made to distract the public from pressing issues, such as the alleged 12,000 bighas of land connected to the Chief Minister’s family.
