Thiruvananthapuram, June 30 (NationPress) Following the alarming disclosure made by renowned urologist Dr Haris Chirackal, who leads the Urology Department at the esteemed Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and Hospital, a team of four medical specialists has initiated an investigation as of Monday.
The inquiry has been commissioned by Veena George, a former journalist and the current State Health Minister.
Dr Chirackal raised concerns about a critical deficit in medical equipment and supplies within his department, asserting that this shortfall is adversely affecting patient care. His claims, initially shared in a social media update last week, received significant public backing before he subsequently retracted them.
During the investigation, Chirackal reaffirmed his allegations and provided documentation to substantiate his statements.
This matter has placed considerable pressure on Health Minister Veena George, especially from Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who has been outspoken regarding the apparent deterioration of the state's healthcare system.
“We have consistently argued that the health sector is on life support while the Minister relies on public relations. This disclosure merely reveals the truth. A five-member expert panel has now been assigned to compile a comprehensive report and propose a strategic plan for the sector,” remarked Satheesan.
In his retracted post, Chirackal expressed that the persistent lack of vital medical equipment and supplies was postponing patient treatment. He voiced his frustration over the unresponsiveness to his repeated pleas for assistance and emphasized that he was unafraid of potential job termination for voicing his concerns.
However, other doctors interviewed by the investigation team reportedly disagreed with Chirackal’s perspective.
K.N. Balagopal, the State Finance Minister, also addressed the situation, stating, “There has been no decrease in funding for the health sector, contrary to media portrayals. A detailed breakdown of budget allocations will be made public shortly.”
