Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 8 ( IANS) Dr. Haris Chirackal, a whistleblower and faculty member at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, has raised serious concerns, alleging that government officials are targeting him for revealing corruption and systemic failures in the healthcare system.
Chirackal stated that false allegations are being fabricated against him and accused senior administrators, including the Principal, Superintendent, and Deputy Superintendent, of unlawfully accessing his office and tampering with important files.
He expressed his concern that this interference was aimed at framing him, as his office holds crucial documents and valuable surgical equipment.
In a correspondence to the Kerala Government Medical Staff Teachers' Association (KGMSDA), he highlighted the absence of CCTV surveillance near his office, allowing easy access without his awareness.
Chirackal further alleged that a duplicate key was utilized to lock his room following an inspection.
His troubles began after he pointed out a critical shortage of medical supplies, which led to the postponement of surgeries at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital.
This revelation displeased Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who criticized Chirackal for painting a negative picture of Kerala's healthcare sector.
Chirackal faced scrutiny after publicly disclosing the lack of surgical instruments at the college.
Despite receiving a show-cause notice from the Director of Medical Education (DME), he has requested additional time to respond, stating that he will only do so after reviewing the inquiry committee's findings.
In a recent inspection, a surgical tool previously reported missing by Health Minister Veena George was discovered in the operating theatre, leading to an investigation based on prior reports of its disappearance.
Chirackal affirmed that he had requested the necessary equipment as early as March and June, countering the government's assertion that they were uninformed.
He also criticized the institution's inadequate infrastructure, mentioning that he had to buy paper for official documents himself.
“The equipment I sought was a life-saving device. No citizen's life should be jeopardized due to financial limitations,”
the doctor stated.
