Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) A group of individuals from Gujarat protested outside the Congress national headquarters on Wednesday in response to offensive comments made by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge regarding the state and its residents.
This demonstration was triggered by a controversial remark made by Kharge on April 5 during a campaign speech in Kerala, where he allegedly described the people of Gujarat as "illiterate" and accused them of being "deceived" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also asserted that neither PM Modi nor Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan could mislead the intelligent and educated population of Kerala.
“Don’t mislead the people of Kerala. They are very clever and educated. Modiji, Vijayan, you may be able to deceive those who are illiterate in Gujarat or elsewhere, but you cannot fool the people of Kerala,” Kharge stated during his speech.
A significant number of protesters gathered outside the Congress office, voicing their frustration over the remarks.
One protester expressed to IANS that such comments disrespect the people of Gujarat and disregard their contributions to the nation.
Another protester remarked, “During the struggle for independence, Mahatma Gandhi, who hailed from Gujarat, played a crucial role. Today, leaders like Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are bringing us pride and aiding in development. The Congress party is losing its influence across states, and such remarks reflect their frustration. I fail to understand what they hope to achieve with such statements.”
BJP MP Dhaval Patel condemned Kharge’s remarks. “Kharge, in his Kerala campaign, stated that six crore people from Gujarat are illiterate. This has sparked widespread outrage among Gujaratis, leading to this protest. This is not the first time similar comments have been made; even Rahul Gandhi and others have previously made similar statements,” he claimed.
He further noted that such remarks indicate a negative perspective towards Gujaratis and suggested that Congress makes these comments out of political desperation, knowing their prospects in the state are limited.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor voiced concerns regarding the declining quality of political discourse, suggesting that standards should not be lowered to parallel those who engage in inappropriate language.
