Mumbai, Sep 29 (NationPress) The head of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party and MLA Abu Azmi expressed strong disapproval towards the Uttar Pradesh government concerning the recent 'I Love Muhammad' protests held in Bareilly. He emphasized that such assemblies should not have occurred without the necessary permissions from local authorities.

Azmi asserted that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated, labeling it as a state of 'jungle raj'.

Violence erupted in the Kotwali area of Bareilly on Friday when a sizable group brandishing 'I Love Muhammad' signs gathered outside a mosque, following the cancellation of a planned demonstration by cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan.

The situation quickly escalated, prompting a significant police response.

In an interview with IANS, Azmi remarked, "I believe the 'I Love Muhammad' issue originated on Eid when the slogan was chanted and legal cases were filed. However, taking to the streets without permission is unacceptable. There is a state of jungle raj in Uttar Pradesh, and protesting without authorization is inappropriate. Permission was necessary."

He further urged those proclaiming love for the Prophet to embody his teachings.

"Those who say they love Muhammad should strive to follow his example. They should become role models that inspire others to declare their love for him," Azmi stated.

The Samajwadi Party leader also commented on the detention of Tauqeer Raza Khan, head of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, who was taken into custody on Saturday for allegedly orchestrating the violence.

Azmi criticized the severity of the punishment, calling the police response "excessive".

Following the clashes, police conducted overnight operations, arresting eight individuals, including Khan, and detaining over two dozen others.

Authorities reported that more than 500 suspects were being identified using video and CCTV evidence.

"The mistake was not significant, but the repercussions are too harsh. The police's treatment of the protesters is unjust. If there were illegal activities, arrests could have been made or water cannons could have been deployed. The way the protesters were handled and the way their signs were discarded was inappropriate," Azmi said.

He concluded, "The government should have acted differently, but with the state of jungle raj in UP, anything can happen."

Point of View

We maintain that discussions around law, order, and civil liberties are paramount. The events in Bareilly reflect a critical moment for governance and public expression, and we stand by the principles of peaceful protest while advocating for adherence to legal protocols.
