Chandigarh, May 4 (NationPress) Just before a crucial one-day special legislative Assembly session regarding the allocation of the state’s water resources to Haryana, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of Punjab has raised questions about the Congress party’s inconsistent stance on this matter.
Furthermore, they have denounced the BJP-led Central and Haryana governments for allegedly conspiring to deny Punjab its rightful share of water.
During a press conference, AAP Member of Parliament Malvinder Singh Kang accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of perpetuating a historical injustice initiated by the Congress party against Punjab.
“The BJP and Congress have a long-standing record of depriving Punjab of its water rights. Today, senior Congress figure Randeep Surjewala accused AAP and the BJP of collaborating on water issues, but the truth is quite the opposite. The Congress laid the groundwork for exploiting Punjab's water resources, and the BJP is merely continuing this trend,” stated Kang.
He criticized Congress for its duality, emphasizing the contradictory positions of Congress leaders from Punjab and Haryana. “Surjewala should clarify whether the Punjab Congress is correct or the Haryana Congress. During an all-party meeting in Punjab, Congress leaders supported Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s position that the state will not accept any coercion regarding its water rights. Yet today, Surjewala has attempted to rationalize Haryana’s water mismanagement while blaming Punjab,” he added.
Kang also highlighted historical injustices committed by Congress administrations, from the time of Indira Gandhi to the laying of the SYL canal’s foundation stone by the Punjab Congress Chief Ministers. “The Congress legacy is centered on undermining Punjab’s rights, with the BJP simply accelerating this agenda,” remarked Kang.
He commended Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for his proactive initiatives aimed at safeguarding Punjab’s water rights and enhancing irrigation infrastructure. “Previously, Punjab’s irrigation capacity via the canal system was 25 percent. Today, it has improved to over 60 percent thanks to significant advancements under CM Mann’s leadership. For years, Punjab’s groundwater was over-exploited, leading many regions into critical depletion. This government has reversed that trend,” Kang asserted.
He pointed out that while Punjab has been responsible with its water usage, conserving 11 percent of its allocated share, Haryana has already consumed 130 percent of its quota. Kang criticized Haryana’s mismanagement and urged the Haryana Congress to hold the BJP-led government accountable instead of targeting Punjab.
The AAP leader condemned the authoritarian measures employed by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) under pressure from the Central government. “Although Punjab holds a 60 percent stake in the BBMB, the Central government unilaterally transferred key officials, disregarding this fact. This is not governance but a form of dictatorship and hooliganism. The BJP-led Central government, in collusion with Haryana, is attempting to force Punjab to relinquish its rightful share of water. Such coercive tactics will not be tolerated,” Kang concluded.
