Chandigarh, Nov 17 (NationPress) Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal addressed Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann in a letter on Monday, highlighting the significant disregard experienced by farmers in Sahnewal, Ludhiana district, who are yet to receive their promised compensation for flood damages.
Baliawal pointed out that areas like Sasarali, Boothgarh Banjara, and Sasarali Colony faced extensive devastation due to the recent floods triggered by the overflowing Sutlej river.
Farmers have not only lost their crops but also large portions of their agricultural land, he stated.
In his correspondence, Baliawal reminded the Chief Minister of his assurance made on September 12, which promised compensation to all families affected by the floods before Diwali.
“However, more than a month after Diwali, many victims are still in limbo,” he remarked.
Baliawal noted that 77 farming families in Sahnewal have yet to receive any compensation. He criticized the Aam Aadmi Party government for turning the compensation initiative into a mere “photo-op,” while actual victims continue to endure hardship and uncertainty.
“Although the government made grand announcements, the reality is that farmers have seen no financial support. Their plight has been met with empty promises and no tangible aid,” Baliawal asserted.
He urged the Chief Minister to take prompt action and ensure that compensation reaches all pending beneficiaries' bank accounts without further delay.
Baliawal also included a detailed list of the 77 affected farming families with his letter, seeking immediate attention.
“The anguish these farmers are experiencing is profound. They deserve justice, not further postponements,” Baliawal added.
The state Cabinet, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, approved an increase in compensation for crop loss to farmers, now reaching Rs 20,000 per acre.
The relief package was enhanced to Rs 10,000 per acre for crop losses of 26-75%, Rs 20,000 per acre for losses of 76-100%, and Rs 40,000 for partially damaged houses from the previous Rs 6,500.
