Chandigarh, Aug 17 (NationPress) Approximately 14,200 acres across three districts have been impacted by floodwaters, as reported by Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal on Sunday. He conducted a review of the situation in various flood-prone areas via phone consultations with Deputy Commissioners.
The minister emphasized the need for prompt mitigation efforts to protect lives and property.
Goyal informed the press that flood-like conditions have arisen within the land bordered by river embankments flowing through Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, and Ferozepur districts, primarily due to rising river levels and breaches in temporary embankments created by farmers in the flood plains.
He noted that around 14,200 acres in Kapurthala, Ferozepur, and Fazilka districts have suffered from flood damage.
Among the impacted areas, the land affected in Kapurthala consists of residential communities, whereas Fazilka and Ferozepur mainly face damage to agricultural land.
Goyal reassured the public that both the state government and local administration are dedicated to providing all necessary support to those affected. He directed Deputy Commissioners to establish relief camps in the impacted regions to offer shelter, food, and medical assistance to the displaced individuals. Goyal confirmed that the embankments constructed by the department remain intact and have not overflowed. Vigilance is maintained continuously over these embankments by robust, roster-based teams.
Additionally, the minister instructed the Deputy Commissioners of Tarn Taran and Ferozepur to oversee the Harike headworks around the clock, considering the heightened water inflow from the Sutlej and Beas rivers due to heavy rainfall in upstream areas.
