Chandigarh, April 9 (NationPress) The battle against drugs under ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’, initiated by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to eliminate the drug crisis in the state, has now reached its 40th day as of Wednesday.
On this day, the Punjab Police apprehended 111 drug traffickers and seized 3.7 kg of heroin, 253 kg of poppy husk, along with ₹98,800 in drug-related cash from their possession.
According to official reports, the cumulative number of drug smugglers arrested has soared to 5,535 within just 40 days. This extensive operation, directed by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, was executed simultaneously across all 28 police districts.
It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Mann has urged Police Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police to strive towards making Punjab a drug-free zone.
The government has also established a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to oversee the anti-drug initiative.
Providing further details, Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla stated that over 200 police teams, consisting of more than 1,100 personnel under the guidance of 77 gazetted officers, have conducted raids at 399 locations, resulting in the filing of 66 first information reports (FIRs) statewide.
Additionally, police teams have scrutinized 437 suspicious individuals during the extensive operation.
The state government has implemented a tri-fold strategy known as Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP) to combat the drug issue.
In a significant setback for drug trafficking syndicates, Amritsar Rural Police recently reported the arrest of Tamandeep Singh, a resident of Kakkar village, who was found in possession of two kg of heroin and 900 gm of ICE (crystal meth).
An FIR under the NDPS Act has been lodged at the Lopoke police station.
Ongoing investigations are focused on uncovering both the forward and backward linkages to dismantle the entire network involved, as stated by the DGP.
