Chandigarh, Oct 16 (NationPress) The Secretary of Punjab Vidhan Sabha and Returning Officer, Ram Lok Khatana, presented the election certificate to Rajinder Gupta, a well-known industrialist, who was elected unopposed to the upper chamber of Parliament.
With a family fortune totaling Rs 5053.03 crore, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Gupta notably does not possess a car or any agricultural land. The certificate was awarded in the presence of Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.
Gupta was joined by his wife, Madhu Gupta. Following the review of the nomination papers from independent candidate Navneet Chaturvedi, Gupta and his wife were the only candidates in the competition.
In other news, a trial court in Ropar on Thursday placed Chaturvedi, the principal suspect in a forgery case related to the Rajya Sabha bypoll involving 10 AAP legislators, into police custody until October 23.
Charges of forgery, impersonation, and criminal conspiracy were brought against him for allegedly using the forged signature and name of AAP legislator Dinesh Chadha in his nomination documents.
Following a nearly 28-hour standoff between Chandigarh Police and Punjab Police regarding the custody, the latter arrested Chaturvedi from the Sector 3 police station in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening.
Chaturvedi, who claims to be the president of the Janata Party (India) and is from Jaipur, had submitted two sets of nomination papers as an independent candidate. In his initial submission on October 6, he named 10 AAP MLAs as his proposers without their signatures.
He filed a second set of documents on October 13, which included the names of the same 10 AAP MLAs as proposers, along with their forged signatures. During the verification process, his papers were rejected due to the alleged forgery of all 10 MLAs' signatures.
