Guwahati, Oct 16 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the passing of renowned singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg is expected to submit its chargesheet by November.
While addressing the media in Guwahati, the Chief Minister disclosed that the state government plans to petition the Gauhati High Court to set up a fast-track court aimed at facilitating an expedited trial for this high-stakes case.
He also confirmed the appointment of a specialized public prosecutor to oversee the judicial process, emphasizing the government's dedication to a transparent and prompt pursuit of justice.
"The SIT has been instructed to wrap up its investigation swiftly, and we anticipate that the chargesheet will be ready by November. Additionally, we will appeal to the High Court for the establishment of a fast-track court to prevent any delays in the trial," remarked CM Sarma.
In connection with recent disturbances at the Baksa District Jail associated with the case, the Chief Minister reported that nine suspects have been apprehended after being identified through video evidence.
The individuals detained include Nurul Alom, Mahidul Islam—a member of the All Bodoland Minority Students' Union (ABMSU)—Mustafa Ahmed of ABMSU, Sipjon Ali, Sahidul, Ahela Mia (designated as a D-voter), Ramiz Ali, Asik, and Harekrishna Pathak, a former member of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU).
CM Sarma mentioned that two young individuals injured during the incident are currently receiving treatment at AIIMS and are reported to be in stable condition.
"I instructed my Cabinet colleague Ranjeet Dass to visit AIIMS this morning after misleading reports suggested that the two injured were deceased. The Minister has confirmed that both are stable and receiving appropriate medical care," he stated.
The Chief Minister refuted rumors about fatalities resulting from the Baksa incident, affirming that no deaths have taken place.
He assured that the state government is vigilantly observing the situation and that further arrests may occur as investigations continue, drawing on video footage and eyewitness testimonies.
