Chandigarh, Oct 16 (NationPress) A trial court in Punjab's Ropar has ordered the detention of Navneet Chaturvedi, the primary suspect in the Rajya Sabha bypoll forgery case involving ten Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators, in police custody until October 23.
Chaturvedi is facing charges of forgery, impersonation, and criminal conspiracy for allegedly utilizing the forged signature and name of AAP legislator from Ropar, Dinesh Chadha, in his nomination documents.
Following a lengthy 28-hour standoff between the Chandigarh Police and Punjab Police regarding custody, Chaturvedi was apprehended on Wednesday evening at the Sector 3 police station in Chandigarh.
Claiming to be the president of the Janata Party (India) and originating from Jaipur, Chaturvedi submitted two sets of nomination papers as an independent candidate for the October 24 Rajya Sabha by-election in Punjab.
In his initial submission on October 6, he listed ten AAP MLAs as his proposers without their consent. A second set of documents was filed on October 13, which included the names and signatures of the same MLAs.
Upon examination, his nominations were rejected as the signatures were reportedly forged.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Chaturvedi approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking protection from arrest in the criminal case against him. Concurrently, the state government requested urgent hearings in the High Court.
The High Court responded by asking for replies from the involved parties but refrained from passing any orders.
In his petition, Chaturvedi requested a ten-day protection from arrest and demanded that the Punjab Police present the first information report (FIR) against him in court.
He also accused the Punjab Police of attempting to abduct him on Tuesday.
After the FIR was filed in Ropar, a team from the Punjab Police went to Chandigarh to detain him, but the Chandigarh Police took him into custody instead.
Earlier this week, the Punjab Police filed multiple FIRs after several AAP MLAs reported that their signatures were forged on nomination papers submitted by Chaturvedi.
Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi and Additional Advocate General Chanchal Singla have requested the transfer of custody of the accused to Punjab Police, along with the initiation of contempt and departmental action against those defying court orders.
The Punjab Police have commenced legal proceedings following complaints from sitting Members of the Vidhan Sabha (MLAs) regarding the alleged forgery of their signatures on the nomination papers submitted by Chaturvedi.
