Punjab to Hold Elections for Five Municipal Corporations and 41 Councils on December 21

Chandigarh, Dec 8 (NationPress) The Punjab State Election Commission disclosed on Sunday that elections will be conducted for five Municipal Corporations and 41 Municipal Councils, in addition to Nagar Panchayats, on December 21.

The vote counting will occur on the same day.

The process for filing nominations is set to commence on Monday, as stated by State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri during a press briefing.

The deadline for submitting nominations is December 12, followed by the scrutiny of nominations on December 13. The final date for withdrawal of nominations is December 14.

Among the 37,32,636 registered voters, there are 19,55,888 men, 17,76,544 women, and 204 others.

The voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. using EVMs. The counting of the votes will be carried out at the polling stations.

Polling will be conducted for 381 wards of the Municipal Corporations and 598 wards of the Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats, wherever necessary.

The Commissioner indicated that security measures would be coordinated by the Police Department. There are 1,609 polling locations equipped with 3,809 polling booths. Out of these, 344 locations have been classified as hypersensitive and 665 as sensitive.

Approximately 21,500 police and Home Guard personnel will be assigned to maintain order.

Chaudhuri mentioned that three personnel will be allocated to a single polling station, while four will be assigned for a double polling station. For triple polling stations, five personnel will be deployed, and six for a quad polling station.

If necessary, the Commissioners of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police have the authority to enhance security at polling sites.

Around 23,000 election personnel will be appointed for duty during the elections. Additionally, twenty-five IAS and PCS officers will serve as general observers in the districts to ensure the elections are conducted smoothly and peacefully.
