Chandigarh, March 27 (NationPress) Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Friday a comprehensive enforcement initiative by the Taxation Department aimed at combating tobacco tax evasion. This operation has led to the discovery of unauthorized goods valued at Rs 1.5 crore.
“In light of the recent hike in tax rates on tobacco items such as cigarettes, biris, and related products, the department acted on specific intelligence indicating a rise in tax evasion within this industry,” he stated.
“Responding to this information, teams from four State Investigation and Preventive Units (SIPUs) located in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Jalandhar were deployed. These units conducted simultaneous inspections at eight separate sites, which included five registered businesses and three that were operating without any registration.”
Discussing the outcomes of the enforcement operation, the Minister reported, “Significant findings were made in Ludhiana and Amritsar, where enforcement teams worked diligently to uncover hidden storage sites and unrecorded stock. “During the meticulous inspections of both principal shops and related warehouses, a considerable volume of goods was discovered being stored and sold without legitimate invoices.”
The confiscated items included around 1.32 lakh packs of Indian cigarettes, 18,472 packs of Indian biris, 302 packs of zarda, 13 packets and 95 boxes of imported cigarettes, 148 pieces of foreign-made hookah materials, 13,000 lighters, and 18 packs of Coolip.
The minister indicated that a tax liability exceeding Rs 50 lakh, along with applicable penalties, will be rigorously enforced on the seized goods according to legal stipulations. Thus far, Rs 12 lakh has already been collected, with additional recovery efforts currently in progress.
Reiterating the government's unwavering commitment to tackling tax evasion, Minister Cheema stated, “These coordinated enforcement actions will persist to guarantee strict compliance with tax regulations and protect state revenue.”
He also advised traders to ensure proper documentation and strictly follow legal requirements to avoid facing severe penalties.
