Rabindra Jena Leaves BJD, Poised to Join BJP: What’s Next?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 10 (NationPress) In a significant setback for the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD), prominent party figure and ex-Lok Sabha MP Rabindra Kumar Jena officially announced his resignation from the BJD on Tuesday.
In his correspondence directed to Naveen Patnaik, the BJD president and Leader of Opposition (LoP), Jena cited personal reasons for his departure.
“I have been a committed member of the party for many years, enhancing its structure while serving the constituents of Balasore. However, due to some personal circumstances, I have made the tough choice to separate from the party,” stated Jena.
The seasoned politician emphasized that his lengthy affiliation with the party would always be a cherished chapter in his life. He expressed heartfelt thanks to the state leadership, colleagues, and BJD supporters in Balasore district for their support, respect, and the chances he received during his tenure.
“I sincerely express my profound gratitude to the state leadership, my colleagues, and all the party workers of Balasore district for the cooperation, respect, and opportunities I have received during this period. I humbly request that you accept my resignation and relieve me of all party responsibilities,” Jena concluded in his letter to Patnaik.
It is noteworthy that Jena, a well-known entrepreneur, was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Balasore constituency in 2014, but faced defeat against senior BJP leader Pratap Chandra Sarangi in the 2019 elections by a narrow margin.
Rumors are swirling that Jena may soon officially join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a forthcoming event.
In the wake of his resignation, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty claimed that Jena's exit was driven by apprehension of impending CBI actions linked to his alleged role in the multi-crore chit fund scam. He further accused the ruling BJP of persistently threatening Jena with CBI repercussions concerning the chit fund scandal.
Furthermore, Jena's resignation comes at a critical time ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, especially since his wife, Subasini Jena, is currently a BJD MLA representing the Basta Assembly constituency. Political analysts noted that her vote could significantly influence the selection of the fourth candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls.
