Why Did Raghav Chadha Slam the ‘10-Minute Delivery’ Culture?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) During the Zero Hour in Rajya Sabha on Friday, Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha from Punjab raised a critical issue by calling for urgent governmental action to safeguard the rights of millions of delivery personnel he termed as “gig workers”.
He criticized the “perilous” 10-minute delivery model promoted by “quick-commerce platforms”.
Labeling delivery workers from Zomato, Swiggy, and others, along with service partners from Urban Company, as the “invisible wheels of the Indian economy”, Chadha pointed out that unicorn companies have reached billion-dollar valuations at the expense of the “broken backs and risked lives” of these employees.
“Every time we press a button on our phone -- ‘Your order is on its way’, ‘Your ride has arrived’ -- there is a human being racing against time, jumping red lights, overspeeding, because if he is late by even a minute, his rating drops, incentives vanish, or worse, his ID gets blocked,” the Rajya Sabha MP emphasized.
He outlined three significant challenges faced by gig workers, noting that the trending 10-minute delivery compels riders to flout traffic regulations and endanger their lives daily to avoid customer complaints and negative ratings. He stated they endure 12-14 hours in extreme heat, severe cold, toxic pollution, and heavy rain without protective gear, all while working under inhumane conditions. Furthermore, he pointed out the total lack of social safeguards, including the absence of permanent employment, meaningful accident or health insurance, and job security.
“They mask their pain, insecurity, and despair behind a forced smile, hand over your parcel, and plead -- ‘Sir, please give a five-star rating’. They are not machines; they are someone’s father, husband, brother, or son,” Chadha passionately argued.
Calling for immediate deliberation, the AAP leader urged Parliament to at least discuss the “pressure of 10-minute delivery” on gig workers’ rights to social security.
“The nation's progress relies on the efforts of these silent warriors,” he stated.
In a social media post, Chadha remarked, “Zomato & Swiggy delivery boys, Blinkit & Zepto riders, Ola & Uber drivers, Urban Company plumbers, and technicians deserve dignity, protection, and fair compensation.”
