Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 3 (NationPress) Activist Rahul Easwar, who was detained regarding the alleged online harassment of a young woman who accused Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, was remanded to a two-day police custody on Wednesday.

The Thiruvananthapuram District Sessions Court authorized the police to hold him until 5 p.m. on Friday, after listening to arguments from both parties. The prosecution argued that custodial interrogation is necessary to explore any potential conspiracy behind the online harassment targeting the complainant.

The police also requested approval to perform a thorough search of Easwar’s office as part of their investigation.

Since his arrest last week, Easwar has been held in the Poojappura Central Jail and has initiated a hunger strike in protest. On Wednesday morning, he required medical attention due to fatigue and dehydration, leading to the administration of intravenous fluids.

Jail officials reported that his health has deteriorated as a result of refusing food and water. Easwar has consistently claimed that his arrest is unlawful and that no crime warranting non-bailable charges has occurred.

His legal team asserted in court that he did not disclose the complainant’s identity or personal information on social media. The defense maintains that the charges are politically motivated and that the arrest breaches procedural protections.

Easwar’s bail request will undergo a comprehensive hearing on Saturday before the Sessions Court. His attorneys are anticipated to reiterate that the case lacks legal foundation and that his ongoing detention does not serve any investigative purpose.

In the meantime, police officials assert that further custodial interrogation is crucial to authenticate digital evidence and identify potential accomplices in the online campaign against the complainant.

Easwar’s arrest and subsequent hunger strike have sparked significant public discourse, particularly in light of the political sensitivity surrounding the initial complaint against the MLA. Over the years, Easwar has been a prominent commentator on national television, especially regarding social issues and controversies related to the Sabarimala temple.
