New Delhi, July 8 (NationPress) Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is preparing for his visit to Patna on Wednesday, July 9, to participate in a statewide bandh organized by opposition parties protesting the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. However, Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, the National Spokesperson for JD(U), has rebuffed the Opposition's concerns, labeling the protests as mere 'political theatrics'.
This visit by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, coincides with escalating political tensions in Bihar, where the Opposition accuses the NDA government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, of undermining the democratic process just before the Assembly elections.
In response, JD-U's Rajeev Ranjan Prasad stated that the SIR is a standard procedure and not a conspiracy. He mentioned, 'By the time Rahul Gandhi arrives, almost half of Bihar’s forms will have been submitted to the Election Commission. This process was also observed in 2003. To date, 36 percent of Bihar's voter forms have been collected,' he informed IANS on Wednesday.
Prasad defended the integrity of the process by contrasting it with past Congress administrations. He claimed, 'The nation has witnessed how, during the Congress era, Election Commission officials were appointed at the whims of party leaders.' He added, 'Today, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the appointments of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are conducted through established legal frameworks.'
Regarding law and order, Prasad addressed the recent murder of businessman Gopal Khemka, stating that one suspect has been apprehended while another was neutralized during a police encounter. 'Bihar Police is acting swiftly. Significant developments are anticipated soon,' he assured.
He dismissed the Opposition's claims of a law-and-order breakdown, arguing that the most severe crime period in Bihar was between 1990 and 2005. 'Under CM Nitish Kumar’s guidance, the situation has improved significantly. The police are equipped with advanced technology and respond promptly — no criminal involved in such heinous acts is spared,' he asserted.
