New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) The authorities have issued a warning to railway pensioners to stay alert against scams involving messages that falsely claim to update pension payment orders (PPOs) or service records.

The Ministry of Railways has reported that certain cyber criminals are making fraudulent phone calls and dispatching SMS/WhatsApp messages impersonating Railway officials, attempting to extract personal and financial information under the guise of PPO updates, KYC verification, or additional pension benefits.

The ministry emphasized that the Railways do not send links or communications for the purpose of updating PPOs or service records.

“No authorized Railway personnel will request bank details, OTPs, passwords, or any sensitive information through phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, or social media. Pensioners are encouraged to remain cautious and to inform their family members about these scams,” it stated.

Any suspicious calls or messages should be reported immediately to the Police Cyber Cell and the relevant administrative office.

In related news, Aadhaar-based authentication, multi-layer cybersecurity, and anti-fraud strategies have led to the deactivation of 3.03 crore suspicious user IDs in train ticket bookings in 2025, ensuring smooth transactions for legitimate users.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that 60.43 billion malicious bot requests were blocked in six months (up to December 2025), preserving the integrity of the e-ticketing system.

Additionally, there have been 376 complaints filed on the National Cyber Crime Portal regarding 3.99 lakh suspicious bookings, and 12,819 dubious email domains were blocked in 2025.

To prevent misuse and ensure fairness in Tatkal bookings, Aadhaar-based one-time password (OTP) verification has been launched for online Tatkal ticket purchases. This Aadhaar authentication enables instant verification of user identity, crucial given the time-sensitive nature of Tatkal ticket bookings.

The minister also noted that several security measures have been put in place to address OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project) application security vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, to enhance system efficiency, Indian Railways has adopted a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to offload static content and reduce direct traffic on the internet ticket booking website.

Point of View

It's paramount to prioritize the safety of our community. The government's proactive approach in informing railway pensioners about potential scams reflects a commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations against cyber fraud. Awareness and vigilance are essential in today's digital landscape.
