Shillong, June 13 (NationPress) - The three Special Investigation Team (SIT) units of the Meghalaya police are conducting separate interrogations of the five individuals implicated in the murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi, as reported on Friday.

Sources indicate that the interrogation has totaled 25 hours thus far, with each suspect being questioned individually.

“The SIT teams are focusing their inquiries based on evidence and data collected from both Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya, ” stated a source.

All five accused, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife, were presented in a Shillong court on June 11—ten days following the recovery of Raja's body on June 2 from a deep gorge beneath the Wei Sawdong parking lot at Riat Arliang in the East Khasi Hills district, a shocking incident that reverberated throughout the nation.

The court has placed all five suspects in police custody for eight days.

A source added: “Today (Friday), the interrogation was centered around Sonam's marriage and facts leading up to the wedding. There are noted discrepancies between Sonam's and Raja's statements on several key points.”

Questions regarding the clothing and burqa worn during the incident were also raised, with the SIT teams inquiring about the funds in the bank account.

In response to the brutal murder in Sohra, the Meghalaya government has decided to enhance existing laws to better protect residents and limit the influx of criminal elements masquerading as tourists.

This government action follows the horrific murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was allegedly killed during a honeymoon trip in the Sohra-Cherrapunji region, purportedly as part of a plot devised by his wife Sonam and her lover, Raj Singh Kushwaha.

Cabinet spokesperson and Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday determined to review the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016, and implement stricter provisions to reduce the risk of criminal elements entering Meghalaya under the guise of tourism.

Alongside Sonam and Raj Singh Kushwaha, 21, the alleged mastermind, other accused individuals include Anand Singh Kurmi, 23, Akash Rajput, 19, and Vishal Singh Chauhan, 22.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that police officials are diligently questioning the five accused to uncover the truth behind this shocking crime.

“After three to four days of questioning, we plan to take all five suspects to the Sohra-Cherrapunji areas to recreate the crime scene as part of our investigation,” Syiem informed IANS.

He added that charge sheets against the accused would be submitted to the court as soon as feasible.
