Is There a Rise in Online Investment Fraud in Rajasthan?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Feb 20 (NationPress) In response to a notable increase in cyber fraud incidents associated with online investment and trading platforms, the Cyber Branch of the Rajasthan Police has released an urgent advisory, following the directives of the Director General of Police, Rajasthan.
Investors are strongly advised to verify any UPI ID, QR code, or bank account number using a SEBI Check prior to making any financial commitments related to investments or trading.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Vikas Sharma stated that cybercriminals are becoming more adept at enticing individuals with fraudulent investment opportunities that promise substantial returns.
To protect investors, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has rolled out a verification tool that allows individuals to ascertain if the UPI ID or bank account used for transactions is associated with a SEBI-registered intermediary.
To conduct a SEBI Check, investors should either download the SEBI Saathi App or navigate to the official website of the Securities and Exchange Board of India.
On the homepage, they can select the “SEBI Check” option and either upload the QR code of the relevant individual or entity or input the UPI ID or bank account number for verification.
A valid result indicates that the UPI ID is indeed linked to a SEBI-registered intermediary, making it secure for transactions.
Conversely, if the result indicates that the UPI ID is invalid, it implies that it is not registered with SEBI, and payments should not be processed in such scenarios.
Investors are encouraged to transact only through SEBI-registered brokers or investment advisors, exercise caution against offers on social media or messaging apps that claim to “double your money overnight,” and avoid transferring investment funds into personal bank accounts.
In the event of falling victim to cyber fraud, individuals are urged to immediately dial the national helpline 1930, reach out to the Cyber Help Desk at 9256001930 / 9257510100, report the situation on the official portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in), or visit the nearest police station or cyber police station.
