New Delhi, Oct 22 (NationPress) The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, officially awarded the prestigious insignia of the Honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army to the eminent javelin thrower and two-time Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra during a ceremonial pipping event held at South Block on Wednesday.
Neeraj joined the Indian Army as a junior commissioned officer, holding the rank of naib subedar, on August 26, 2016, and has served with The Rajputana Rifles. He made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to clinch an Olympic gold medal in track and field during the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. He further solidified his legacy by winning gold at the World Athletics Championships in 2023 and securing a silver medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
While interacting with Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra and his family, Rajnath Singh praised him as an exemplar of perseverance, patriotism, and the Indian spirit of excellence. The Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, along with other senior officials from the Indian Army and Territorial Army, were present at the event.

In recognition of his remarkable accomplishments and devoted service to the nation, Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra was presented an Honorary commission in the Territorial Army by President Droupadi Murmu on April 16, 2025.
Previously, he has been honored with awards including the Padma, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
