New Delhi, July 21 (NationPress) On the inaugural day of the monsoon session, Parliament paid homage to individuals who tragically lost their lives in the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22. The Rajya Sabha also commemorated the victims of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that occurred on June 12. Furthermore, five new members took their oath of allegiance to the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, which included three nominated MPs.
As the proceedings commenced, Birendra Prasad Vaishya from the Assam Gana Parishad was the first to take the oath as a Rajya Sabha member. Following him, Kanad Purkayastha from the BJP (Assam) was also sworn in as a member of the Upper House.
Three newly nominated members -- Meenakshi Jain, C. Sadanandan Master, and Harshvardhan Shringla -- also took their oaths during the session.
The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha paid tribute to the extraordinary life of C. Sadanandan Master, referring to him as a symbol of courage and a staunch opponent of injustice. He highlighted Master’s unwavering commitment to education and his substantial contributions as a teacher and social worker, emphasizing his passionate advocacy for youth empowerment. Sadanandan Master lost both of his legs due to a political attack in 1994.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Sadanandan Master, referring to his life as a beacon of resilience in the face of adversity. PM Modi commended Master’s dedication to national development, despite the challenges he faced, and his ongoing efforts in education and social work.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who took his oath as a nominated MP, was acknowledged for his illustrious career as a diplomat and strategic thinker. Shringla, who has held positions such as India’s Foreign Secretary and Ambassador to nations including the United States, Bangladesh, and Thailand, has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s foreign policy. He has also been instrumental in contributing to the G20 presidency.
Dr Meenakshi Jain, a distinguished scholar, historian, and researcher, was also lauded for her remarkable contributions to education, literature, history, and political science. The Rajya Sabha Chairman underscored her significant impact on academic discourse and her esteemed work in these disciplines.
