Raipur, Feb 15 (NationPress) As the counting for the urban body elections in Chhattisgarh was ongoing on Saturday, former chief minister and BJP leader Dr. Raman Singh proclaimed a significant victory, further asserting that the Congress party has suffered a ‘hattrick of defeats’ by consistently losing in recent elections.
Addressing the media, the Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Assembly remarked, “By facing defeats in the Assembly, then in Lok Sabha, and now in the urban body elections, Congress has indeed made a hattrick of defeats. This urban body election was direct, and the voters have clearly rejected the Congress. The people opted for BJP councillors by supporting our party candidates.”
“These results reflect the deteriorating state of the ‘defeated Congress’, which is divided within Chhattisgarh,” the BJP leader stated.
Singh also took the opportunity to commend the party workers, officials, and notably Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, under whose guidance the party emerged victorious in the urban body elections.
He claimed that around 40 BJP councillors have secured wins so far, mentioning that in specific regions, party candidates triumphed by margins exceeding 40,000 votes. He described this as a historic achievement, especially noting that a BJP councillor in Raipur won by more than 70,000 votes.
Earlier on Saturday, the vote counting process began at 9 a.m. with postal ballots, followed by the counting of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes from 9:30 a.m. under strict security measures.
The polling for 10 Municipal Corporations, 49 Municipal Councils, and 114 Nagar Panchayats across the state took place on February 11. There are 44.74 lakh voters in total — 22.52 lakh males and 22.73 lakh females. The Election Commission established a total of 597 polling stations throughout the state for the urban body elections.
In January, the Chhattisgarh Election Commission declared that the state would conduct urban body elections on February 11, with results expected to be announced on February 15.
