Ranchi, March 30 (NationPress) The dispute regarding the construction of a flyover ramp adjacent to the Sarna Sthal, a revered site for tribals in Sirmatoli, Ranchi, has intensified. On Sunday, thousands of tribal members congregated at the location, insisting on the total removal of the ramp, which they argue encroaches upon their sacred space and customs.
As protests escalated, officials deployed a substantial police presence. The entire vicinity has been cordoned off, effectively converting it into a fortified area.
This conflict has been brewing for several weeks. A significant protest occurred on March 22, leading to a complete shutdown of Ranchi. Demonstrators contend that the ramp, part of a flyover under construction, obstructs access to Sarna Sthal and reduces the area necessary for large religious gatherings.
Sirmatoli is home to the largest Sarna Sthal in Ranchi, a site of great cultural and spiritual significance for tribal communities. Each year, grand processions from Ranchi and neighboring areas culminate here during Sarhul, the community’s largest festival, which this year falls on April 1, heightening the sensitivity of the situation.
Tribal organizations assert that the flyover ramp, constructed very close to the sacred location, will disrupt religious ceremonies, including the large processions that take place during Sarhul. They argue that this is not merely a matter of encroachment but a direct affront to their faith and cultural heritage.
In light of the escalating protests, the district administration has taken partial corrective measures by opting to shorten the ramp. A significant section has been demolished, and debris removal is still in progress as of Sunday. Yet, this action has not appeased the demonstrators.
Slogans calling for the complete demolition of the structure continue to resonate throughout the streets. Some protesters have warned that if further actions are not taken by the administration, they will dismantle the ramp themselves.
Due to the rising tensions, Sirmatoli Chowk has been designated a high-security area, with Ranchi DIG-cum-SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha, City SP Rajkumar, SDM Utkarsh Kumar, and officers from various police stations deployed in the vicinity.
The protest is led by tribal organizations under the banner of ‘Sirmatoli Bachao Morcha.’ Last week, these groups staged a dramatic demonstration in Ranchi, conducting a symbolic funeral procession for all tribal MLAs and ministers, including the Chief Minister, accusing them of neglecting their religious rights.
