Imphal, July 23 (NationPress) Ratan Thiyam, a celebrated figure in Indian theatre and recipient of the Padma Shri, passed away in a hospital in Imphal on Wednesday, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that transformed contemporary Indian theatre, according to officials.
He was 77.
"Thiyam succumbed to a prolonged illness at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences early Wednesday morning," a state government official informed the media.
Awarded India's fourth-highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri in 1989, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, Thiyam was acclaimed for merging traditional Manipuri artistic expressions with modern techniques, innovation, and poetic storytelling. In 1976, he founded the Chorus Repertory Theatre in Imphal and briefly led the National School of Drama in New Delhi from 1987 to 1988.
