IANS: What are your thoughts on the gangrape of a 24-year-old student in Kolkata, and the remarks made by Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee regarding the security of women?

Aparna Yadav: I find these comments to be incredibly insensitive. Such statements should never be made, particularly by public representatives. The state government has a responsibility to take this issue seriously. As the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee must step up to ensure justice is served promptly. This transcends politics; it is about fundamental human decency and safety. I urge the people of Bengal to reject this type of leadership. In just ten months, numerous crimes, including murders and rapes, have occurred. Reports indicate that the victim of this incident was viciously assaulted with a hockey stick. It is only through divine intervention that she survived and could testify. I am grateful to the medical team that provided immediate care and saved her life. I commend this brave girl and her parents for instilling such courage in her to speak out despite the trauma. She represents countless women whose pleas remain unheard in Bengal. In light of this, the MP who made such statements should apologize immediately, and appropriate actions must be taken against him. I am puzzled by his silence. This is not a matter of party lines—any woman can be a victim, regardless of political affiliation. So far, we have learned that the accused seem to have connections with the ruling party. Is the Mamata government attempting to protect them? The Prime Minister is known for his strict stance on justice. I trust that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring this situation, and we demand immediate justice for this girl.

IANS: How is the Women’s Commission performing in Uttar Pradesh?

Aparna Yadav: The UP Women’s Commission has an impressive track record. We receive numerous cases, but it is essential to note that Uttar Pradesh currently leads India in the investigation and resolution of sexual offense cases. This success is a result of collective efforts—from the Women’s Commission to the police and administration, supported by the effective governance of our Chief Minister. Women in Uttar Pradesh, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's leadership, are significantly safer now. We have addressed approximately 96.8% of the grievances that come to us—the highest rate in India for handling sexual offenses. Sexual violence is a societal issue that can affect anyone, regardless of their status. The crucial aspect is that immediate action is taken at every level. Since the formation of the Women’s Commission, our approach has been swift and dedicated. While we acknowledge our accomplishments thus far, our commitment is to continually enhance our efforts.

IANS: What responsibilities does the UP Women’s Commission hold?

Aparna Yadav: The Women’s Commission has significant responsibilities. In Uttar Pradesh, our operational scope is extensive. Personally, I ensure that no one's rights are violated. Our role is quasi-judicial, granting us the authority to investigate and identify wrongdoing. Occasionally, we encounter cases where the man is right and the woman is wrong. In such situations, we must deliver unbiased justice. I want to emphasize that Uttar Pradesh is a safe place for women, and we maintain a positive social environment. Although some incidents are genuinely tragic, I urge everyone to stop politicizing these issues. Let us focus on humanity. By placing humanity at the core, we can improve society as a whole.

IANS: What are your thoughts on the death of Shefali Jariwala?

Aparna Yadav: Ultimately, life and death are beyond human control. When it's time, it will come. However, we should be mindful of our lifestyles. I advocate for embracing Ayurvedic traditions wherever feasible and adhering to Indian customs in our daily routines. While going to the gym is beneficial, it is equally important to take time for oneself and embrace our cultural roots. By thoughtfully adopting our traditional ways, we can lead healthier and happier lives.

IANS: What is your perspective on the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case?

Aparna Yadav: That incident was a brutal crime. I consistently state that if someone does not wish to continue a relationship, it is paramount to communicate that maturely. Ending a relationship should not culminate in such cruel violence. The loss is irreparable. Though the individual may not have held significant value for one person, it has devastating repercussions for their family and friends. There is nothing more valuable than a human life. In our traditions, marriage symbolizes a bond lasting seven lifetimes. While societal norms have evolved, I urge everyone to reconnect with our roots. Let’s put an end to the “shut up culture” where feelings are repressed. It is essential to foster patience among the younger generation, particularly in relationships.

IANS: What is your response to the violence in Etawah that followed police actions against two Bhagavat Kathavachaks accused of concealing their caste identity during a religious discourse?

Aparna Yadav: This incident is profoundly unfortunate, and it deeply saddens me. Brahmins have played a pivotal role in safeguarding India's culture, and their contributions are invaluable. Simultaneously, our Constitution guarantees all citizens fundamental rights, including the freedom to worship and express themselves. Everyone deserves the right to practice their religion without fear. The Etawah incident is tragic but also highlights broader societal issues we must confront. We need to uphold everyone’s right to religious freedom while working to prevent similar conflicts in the future. In India, every individual should have the liberty to follow their faith and cultural practices freely. We must reinforce this freedom while promoting harmony and understanding among communities.
