Reporter TV MD Anto Augustine seeks anticipatory bail in Kerala CM defamation case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Reporter Broadcasting Corporation Managing Director Anto Augustine, currently in judicial custody, approached the Thiruvananthapuram District Court on Saturday, 19 September 2026, seeking anticipatory bail in a fresh case filed against him over an alleged attempt to defame Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan through a purported false marriage claim. The court is scheduled to take up his anticipatory bail plea on 23 September.
Background to the Fresh Case
The case was registered on the complaint of senior Indian National Congress (INC) leader and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson Raju P. Nair, who had earlier filed a complaint with the State Police Chief. The Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Police had already recorded Nair's detailed statement before the matter was referred to the Kalamassery police. On Saturday, Nair appeared before the Kalamassery police and gave his statement in connection with the complaint.
Anto has been named the first accused in the First Information Report (FIR). Two others have also been booked for their alleged role in the conspiracy. The Kalamassery police are now expected to question more persons and widen the scope of the investigation.
What the FIR Alleges
The FIR alleges that Anto knowingly possessed and circulated forged documents and that there was a deliberate attempt to defame an elected representative and the office he holds. Among the documents in question is a marriage certificate purportedly issued by a Sub-Registrar's Office in Karnataka, which Anto has claimed was handed to him by two young men. These allegations are part of the police case and have not been established by a court.
Raju P. Nair, speaking to reporters after giving his statement, alleged that a 'major conspiracy' was behind the accusations against the Chief Minister. He further alleged that Anto had revived the marriage claim at a time when the offices of Reporter TV were under search by agencies including the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Nair alleged the episode was part of a blackmail strategy aimed at pressuring authorities during a difficult period for the channel.
Anto's Defence
Anto has maintained that the documents he cited were handed over to him by two young men and has not retracted his claim. He has also asserted possession of the Karnataka marriage certificate. Raju P. Nair, however, alleged the certificate was fabricated and demanded that all documents purportedly in Anto's possession be seized and subjected to forensic examination to establish their origin and identify those allegedly behind the conspiracy.
Mounting Legal Troubles
This fresh legal challenge compounds Anto's existing woes. He is currently in judicial custody in a separate abkari (excise) case, and the Kerala High Court is set to take up his bail plea in that matter on Tuesday, 22 September. With the anticipatory bail hearing in the defamation case scheduled for 23 September and police expected to question more individuals, Anto faces a convergence of serious legal proceedings in the days ahead.
