Telangana CM Revanth Reddy urges govt staff to work one extra hour daily
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday, 25 June appealed to all state government employees to put in an additional hour of work each day, arguing that higher productivity in administration would directly boost state revenues and strengthen the delivery of welfare programmes.
What the Chief Minister Said
Speaking at a signing ceremony where the state government inked memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with banks to extend insurance coverage to all government employees, Revanth Reddy said that the hard work of employees is the cornerstone of successful welfare scheme implementation. He stressed that illegal activities must be curbed and revenue leakages plugged to shore up the state's finances.
'Employees' trust is the government's strength,' he said, adding that any additional revenue generated would be reinvested in employee welfare. He also noted that the government's reputation ultimately rests in the hands of its workforce.
Insurance Coverage for All Employees
A central announcement at the event was the extension of accident insurance to all state government employees, including outsourcing and contract workers. The decision follows an earlier payout of ₹1 crore in insurance compensation to the families of 45 Singareni workers who died in workplace accidents. The Chief Minister described the scheme as a means of providing financial security and 'courage and reassurance' to employees' families in difficult times.
Attack on Previous BRS Government
Revanth Reddy used the occasion to sharply criticise the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government led by former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), accusing it of turning a revenue-surplus Telangana into a state burdened with a debt of ₹8.11 lakh crore over 10 years. He alleged that under BRS rule, employees routinely did not receive their salaries on the first of the month — a situation he said his government has rectified.
The Chief Minister also pushed back against the opposition's use of the term 'Gumpu Mestry' (group leader) as a taunt, reclaiming it as a mark of pride: he described himself as a group leader of government employees who actively connect with common people and marginalised communities.
Development Agenda and What's Next
Revanth Reddy said he has not taken a single day's leave in 30 months in office and that his visits to Delhi are solely to protect Telangana's interests. He reiterated the government's long-term goal of making Telangana the top-ranked state in India and achieving a 3-trillion-dollar economy by 2047. He invited employees to bring their grievances directly to his attention, assuring them the government is prepared to act on legitimate demands.
