Patna, March 19 (NationPress) The State Vigilance Unit (SVU) detained a revenue officer (Kanungo) on allegations of bribery in Bihar's Supaul district on Wednesday.

The accused, Kanungo Vikas Kumar, was apprehended while accepting Rs 5,000 from the complainant, a local resident named Anupam Kumar.

The SVU executed the operation in Gudiya Panchayat under the jurisdiction of Jadia police station on Wednesday, leading to his arrest. An FIR has been filed at the Vigilance Police Station Patna.

According to the complainant, Anupam Kumar, discrepancies were found during a land survey conducted two to three years ago regarding the measurement of his father's purchased land.

“The surveyor allegedly altered the area in official records due to non-payment of bribes. When I approached Vikas Kumar for a resolution, he initially demanded Rs 10,000, later settling for Rs 5,000 after negotiations,” Anupam reported.

Frustrated by the conduct of Kanungo Vikas Kumar, Anupam informed Vigilance officials, who subsequently set a trap and caught the Kanungo accepting the bribe.

DSP of the Vigilance Investigation Bureau, Sujit Kumar Sagar, confirmed the arrest, stating: "The accused was engaged in survey work at the Gudiya Panchayat Government Building when we carried out the operation. A case has been registered under pertinent sections of the anti-corruption law at Patna’s Vigilance police station."

After the bribery arrest of revenue officer Vikas Kumar, the State Vigilance Unit has placed him in a private hotel near the Triveniganj bus stand in Supaul for further legal procedures.

He will be transported to Patna for additional proceedings. Sagar noted that a team of five, led by himself along with DSP Sameer Chandra Jha, acted swiftly to apprehend the accused and draw attention to the corruption within land surveys.

This incident highlights the pervasive corruption in land surveys and the efforts of Vigilance authorities to combat such illicit practices.

The Nitish Kumar government consistently claims zero tolerance for corruption, yet cases of bribery continue to surface in the state.
