Key Takeaways
Patna, Dec 23 (NationPress) A sub-inspector stationed in Siwan district was apprehended red-handed on Tuesday for accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 during an operation by the Bihar Vigilance Department, as part of its ongoing campaign against corruption.
The detained officer is identified as Kanhaiya Kumar Singh, who was serving at the Siwan police station.
This incident is connected to a land dispute that took place on December 18, which resulted in a confrontation between two parties.
A case was subsequently registered at the Siwan police station, designated as Case No. 309, and the investigation was entrusted to SI Kanhaiya Kumar Singh.
According to the complaint filed, the investigating officer solicited a bribe of Rs 40,000 from Sunil Kumar in return for eliminating Sunil’s sister's name from the case diary.
After Sunil Kumar rejected the demand, the officer reportedly threatened to wrongfully involve him in the case.
Feeling pressured by the threats, Sunil Kumar sought assistance from the Vigilance Department in Patna and filed a formal complaint.
Upon receiving the complaint, the Vigilance Department conducted a discreet verification which substantiated the claims.
Consequently, Vigilance Case No. 170/25 was initiated, and a specialized team was formed.
This operation was spearheaded by Vigilance DSP Viplav Kumar, who devised a comprehensive strategy.
The bribe transaction was arranged at Bablu Tea Stall, located in the Maharana Chowk area under the jurisdiction of the Siwan police station.
As soon as SI Kanhaiya Kumar Singh accepted the Rs 40,000 bribe from the complainant, the Vigilance team, which had been monitoring the situation, apprehended him on the spot. The bribe money was seized at the time of the arrest.
“The accused sub-inspector was caught immediately after taking the bribe. The amount has been recovered,” stated Viplav Kumar, DSP of the Vigilance Department.
Following his arrest, the officer was transported to Patna for thorough questioning.
Sources indicate that Vigilance officials are also probing into whether the officer has been involved in other corruption cases previously, as well as any potential connections to middlemen or other police personnel.
The Vigilance Department has reiterated its commitment to an unyielding fight against corruption.
Officials have emphasized that no government employee accepting bribes will escape accountability, irrespective of their position.
This incident has sparked considerable unrest within the Siwan police department.
