Patna, April 16 (NationPress) An Assistant Engineer in the Purnea district of Bihar has been apprehended for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000, according to officials who reported the incident on Thursday.

The individual, identified as Bhushan Prasad, who is associated with the Bihar Education Project, was caught red-handed by a team from the Vigilance department. This action followed a formal complaint lodged by Nandan Kumar Jha, a resident of Hemnagar village within the jurisdiction of Sarsi police station in Purnea.

As per the complaint, Nandan Kumar Jha was overseeing the construction of a school building in Minapur under the Dagrua block. The engineer allegedly requested a 6 percent commission based on the value recorded in the Measurement Book (MB). It was reported that he had previously accepted payments in stages, and this time he insisted on receiving Rs 10,000 before signing off on the Measurement Book.

Following the complaint, the Vigilance team filed a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act at its police station in Patna and set a trap for the accused. He was caught during the act of accepting the bribe.

Officials have confirmed that Bhushan Prasad is currently under interrogation, with further legal actions pending. The detained engineer is expected to be presented before the Vigilance Court in Patna on Friday.

The Vigilance Investigation Bureau has ramped up its efforts against corruption, conducting numerous raids and arrests throughout the state. Authorities have emphasized their dedication to imposing strict penalties on officials engaged in bribery and the abuse of power.

Prior to this incident, on March 13, the Bihar Vigilance Investigation Bureau apprehended a government official in a bribery case in Bettiah, located in the West Champaran district. The vigilance team caught Anurag Abhishek, a Field Officer at the District Dairy Development Office, red-handed while allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 30,000 inside his office.

This operation was initiated after a complaint from Bablu Kumar, a local from Gaunaha. Acting on this complaint, a specialized vigilance team from Patna executed a raid in the Banuchhapar area and detained the implicated official.

Point of View

This case underscores the pressing issue of corruption within public service in Bihar. The vigilance actions reflect a commitment to accountability, but it also raises questions about the systemic issues that allow such practices to persist.
