Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, March 2 (NationPress) The Bihar Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) apprehended Roshan Kumar, an Assistant Engineer affiliated with the District Education Project in Bettiah, on charges of allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.
Officials reported that the engineer purportedly requested the bribe from a contractor to approve financial disbursements for school repair and renovation projects, which included the installation of submersible pumps in multiple government schools.
The arrest was initiated after a contractor lodged a formal complaint, prompting the SVU to conduct a thorough verification of the claims.
Upon validation, a specialized raiding team was assembled, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Bindeshwar Prasad and Deputy Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar.
The team executed a sting operation in Bettiah on Monday evening, apprehending the engineer in the act of accepting the bribe.
Authorities confiscated Rs 5 lakh in cash along with a smartwatch, believed to be part of the bribe, during his arrest.
Following the arrest, the suspect is undergoing interrogation to determine if other officials within the department are implicated in the alleged bribery scheme.
A case has been filed against him under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and subsequent legal actions are in progress.
The SVU has announced that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Previously, on February 19 of this year, the SVU took significant measures against corruption by arresting Junior Engineer Aman Kumar, who was stationed in Sahibganj under Muzaffarpur district, while he was reportedly accepting a bribe of Rs 9,000.
Official sources indicate that the complainant, Rajkumar Tiwari, submitted a written grievance to the SVU in Patna, alleging that the Junior Engineer was soliciting a bribe of Rs 25,000 in exchange for facilitating and expediting paving block installation work in Sahibganj.
