Rewa floods: 4,000+ displaced, Dy CM reviews relief camps after 3-day rain
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Three consecutive days of relentless heavy rain have thrown normal life into disarray across Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh, with the administration evacuating more than 4,000 residents to relief camps as waterlogging paralysed large parts of the region. Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla visited multiple relief camps on Friday, 21 August, reviewing arrangements and directing officials to accelerate rescue operations.
Scale of Disruption
The impact has been especially severe in Teonthar tehsil, where more than 300 villages have been inundated by waterlogging. District Collector Narendra Suryavanshi and Superintendent of Police Kurukaran Singh, accompanied by revenue officials, conducted ground inspections of affected areas in Teonthar tehsil on Friday, assessing the extent of damage and evaluating rescue and relief arrangements. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Siddharth Tiwari also joined the inspection and met with the Collector and SP.
Relief Operations on the Ground
All 4,000-plus displaced residents have been provided food, clean drinking water, and medical facilities at relief camps. Deputy Chief Minister Shukla interacted directly with displaced residents during his camp visits and directed officials to ensure immediate drainage of waterlogged neighbourhoods. He also instructed administrative teams to maintain adequate supplies and remain on round-the-clock alert for any fresh emergencies.
Fatality Reported in Mangawan Tehsil
In a tragic incident, Buddhasen Mishra, a 78-year-old farmer from Bans Gram Panchayat under Mangawan tehsil, died on Friday after falling into deep water. According to police, Mishra had stepped out of his home to look for his buffalo, which had gone out to graze earlier that morning. He reportedly slipped near a well due to the rain-slicked ground and fell in. This is the first confirmed fatality linked to the current spell of rains in Rewa district.
Control Rooms Activated for Emergency Response
The district administration has activated a round-the-clock control room for rain-related emergencies, reachable at 07662-255143. A separate control room is operational within the Rewa Municipal Corporation area, accessible via toll-free number 18008899711. Residents can also report emergencies on 07662-254568, 07662-320105, 07662-310346, 07662-320150, and 07662-320329. Officials have appealed to residents to report any inconvenience immediately so rescue teams can respond without delay.
With the rain showing no immediate sign of relenting, authorities are bracing for further displacement and have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and stay in contact with local administration.
